Research
Along with patient care and education, research is a key component of the Verona Pancreas Institute’s activity. Our surgeons are involved in a multidisciplinary team of scientists whose mission is to improve knowledge of pancreatic diseases and the outcome of patients with such conditions. Furthermore, our surgeons collaborate with different leading institutions across the world.
Since its founding, the pancreatic team at the University of Verona has produced cutting-edge research in the field of acute and chronic pancreatitis, with particular regard to the antibiotic therapy for infected acute pancreatitis, and surgical necrosectomy with peritoneal lavage. Our surgical group has also made important contributions to the definition and treatment of postoperative pancreatic fistula and to the understanding of pancreatic cystic neoplasms.
In the field of basic science, much effort is being spent to understand the genetic program for pancreatic cancer development and progression. The Verona Pancreas Institute and the Verona Applied Research on Cancer Center are currently leading the International Cancer Genome Consortium project on rare pancreatic tumors, including neuroendocrine and rare exocrine tumors. The primary aim of the project is to obtain a comprehensive description of genomic, transcriptomic and epigenomic changes of these neoplasms through their deep sequencing.
